Mr. David
BOARD CERTIFIED AND LICENSED MASTER’S LEVEL OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST

Mr. David Backholm is a licensed and dedicated Occupational Therapist at Bright Start Therapy who brings a compassionate, individualized, and play-based approach to pediatric care. He earned his Master of Science in Occupational Therapy from the University of New England in Portland, Maine, following a Bachelor of Science in Health, Wellness, and Occupational Studies. His educational journey included international study in Tangier, Morocco, where he expanded his understanding of therapeutic care across cultures.
Mr. David discovered his passion for occupational therapy early in college, after viewing a powerful video showcasing adaptive sports for children with disabilities. His interest deepened through hands-on experiences shadowing school-based occupational therapists, where he saw firsthand the incredible impact of meaningful, child-centered interventions. Since then, he has worked across a variety of settings—including home health, clinics, schools, and simulation labs—serving children with diverse developmental needs.
At Bright Start Therapy, Mr. David is known for his thoughtful and engaging treatment sessions that prioritize each child’s unique strengths, interests, and goals. He values the team’s commitment to creating a low-stress, socially enriching environment that supports both learning and joy. He shares, “From the day I was hired, I was met with nothing but friendly and welcoming staff. This team has taught me how to be a successful healthcare professional working with children.”
Mr. David particularly enjoys the opportunity to address a wide range of developmental skills through play, building therapy plans around the child’s passions to help them grow into confident and capable individuals. He believes strongly in the power of family collaboration and finds great joy in hearing about children’s progress both in the clinic and at home.
Outside of work, Mr. David leads an active lifestyle. His hobbies include skiing, hiking, camping, and cooking—with his signature dish being sausage and broccoli Alfredo pasta. A fun fact about Mr. David: he’s an avid cook who loves experimenting in the kitchen to share meals with family and friends.
We are proud to have Mr. David as part of the Bright Start Therapy team. His clinical skill, curiosity, and heartfelt approach make him a valued therapist and a favorite among children and families alike.
